‘The case against Serzh Sargsyan is meaningless’: Armen Ashotyan

December 06,2019 19:45

The criminal charges pressed against third President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan are completely connected to his and the Republican Party’s policies regarding foreign policy. Republican Party Executive Body member Armen Ashotyan made this announcement during a press conference. He confirmed statements in the news that criminal charges have been pressed against Serzh Sargsyan, and that Sargsyan agreed to not leave the country as a deterrence method.

According to Armen Ashotyan, Serzh Sargsyan had plans to visit other countries as part of a specific agenda. “This is an attempt to prevent him from carrying out any foreign policy activities. Serzh Sargsyan has his passport, but the system will not allow him to leave the country.” But this will not have an impact on the Republican Party’s political agenda, as they are making plans for the former president to visit other countries next year. There are also plans for him to visit Artsakh.

Confirming the RPA Executive Body’s statement, Armen Ashotyan spoke about the wiretapping incident that took place before Robert Kocharyan was arrested, where top officials said that the criminal case against Robert Kocharyan is meaningless. Armen Ashotyan stated that the case against Serzh Sargsyan is also meaningless. The RPA is waiting for the trail. According to Armen Ashotyan, this criminal case is only making the process of consolidation against Nikol Pashinyan happen a lot faster, and for that, he said, “Thank you, Pashinyan Nikol.”

Armen Ashotyan said that he does not want the authorities to hope that, by removing Serzh Sargsyan from the picture, the RPA will dissolve. He said that the RPA had three leaders and has survived those losses. He assured that the RPA is not determined by Serzh Sargsyan.

He used Mexican soap operas as an example to prove that he does not exclude the possibility of Serzh Sargsyan being arrested, but he does not understand what that will do for the state. The RPA knows what Serzh Sargsyan’s arrest will do, but “if they need to, they will arrest him.” Armen Ashotyan is not against it: ‘he can stay in prison for a few months until all of this subsides.’
