Russia against Armenia plan to open airport in Nagorno-Karabakh – diplomat

November 12,2012 20:05

Russia believes that plans by Armenia to set up an airport in Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed Armenian-speaking enclave in Azerbaijan and the source of a two-decade Armenian-Azeri conflict, are “fraught with a serious exacerbation of tension in the region,” the Russian ambassador to Azerbaijan said.

The plans are not new, and “we still believe that such a move would not be conducive to rebuilding confidence and would be fraught with a serious exacerbation of tension in the region, and, for that reason, would be counterproductive from the point of view of the process of peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” Vladimir Dorokhin told Interfax.

“We expect that the parties to the conflict will use diplomatic means to solve the new problem, will not resort to threats of attacking aircraft, and will avoid politicizing this issue.”
