“From the point of view of the people, it’s important that trust is established towards the justice system in Armenia. Meanwhile, it’s weak, since people still don’t trust it,” said the head of the EU delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Piotr Switalski to reporters at the EU-funded “Freedom of Information Center.”
He emphasized that the new Armenian government stated that it agrees with the EU’s basic fundamentals and viewpoints, but what’s most important is transparency in the government. “There has been a huge lack of information over these past several years regarding how the governmental processes are going. I am mostly speaking about budgetary processes.”
According to the ambassador, sometimes it surprised him that Armenia would usually keep the budgetary processes a secret. “Two years ago, I was surprised that the amount of socks purchased for the army was being kept a secret. Now I trust that Armenia is on the right path and it will be transparent.”
