The head of the European Union delegation to Armenia and the EU ambassador to Armenia, Piotr Switalski, participated in the Domestic Violence in Armenia: Challenges and Opportunities conference. He said that Armenia has initiated several changes. “In working together to prevent domestic violence, we will be able to create a more just society and we will be able to build more independent and healthier families. These values are extremely important for us.”

Piotr Switalski also noted that the EU is prepared to support efforts to carry out the aforementioned goals. “We agree with the government’s plan. Armenia accepted a law against domestic violence, but it was also announced that Armenia is prepared to ratify the Istanbul convention which, I believe, is very important. But the most important thing is that all of this becomes a part of our everyday work.”

The work of law enforcement is also important in preventing domestic violence, Piotr Switalski said. According to the ambassador, there have been very positive influences. The police in particular have recorded huge progress in incorporating such values into the law.

The ambassador said, “The government has made some very important decisions, but discussions still continue as far as how the law should reflect the goals that the new society in Armenia has. If domestic violence is resolved, Armenia will be able to reach a new level of power, stability, strength, and peace. The EU stands with a society that plays a large role in creating an informed and sensitive atmosphere.”
