Feliks Tsolakyan hosted the delegation led by Kei Toyama

On January 30 Feliks Tsolakyan, Minister of Emergency Situations hosted the delegation led by Kei Toyama, Senior Deputy Director of East and Central Asia and the Caucasus Department of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

The meeting was attended by Kanaye Suzuki, Responsible for Central Asia and Caucasus Division of the same Department, Ogura Torun, Consultant of Projects Development of JICA in Georgia, Ruzan Khojikyan, Coordinator JICA project in Armenia and other officials.

Minister expressed gratitude for the visit and said that the Rescue service car park was substantially updated with the support of JICA. Feliks Tsolakyan spoke about the needs of MES and highlighted the acquisition of heavy equipment, as it is necessary to eliminate the consequences of rockfalls and landslides.

Kei Toyama, Senior Deputy Director of East and Central Asia and the Caucasus Department of Japan International Cooperation Agency expressed gratitude for the warm reception and said with satisfaction that the technical assistance provided by the Japanese side serves its purpose.

The possibilities of providing assistance to Armenia, as well as opportunities of granting loans on preferential terms to Armenia in case of disaster were discussed during the meeting.

Ministry of Emergency Situations of RA has been cooperating with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) since 2007.

Dozens of firefighting cars were provided in the framework of the cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Armenia and the Government of Japan, seismic stations have been installed by JICA funds, the technical support to monitor the landslide was provided by Japanese side, the landslide prevention pilot program was implemented, and furniture and equipment were provided.

The establishment of a public awareness center is planned by technical support of JICA: the main purpose is to increase the resilience to disasters of the country.

“Improving Crisis Communication and Public Awareness for Disaster Risk Management” three-year technical assistance program jointly implemented by the Ministry of Emergency Situations of RA and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is in process. Trainings-seminars were held at the Ministry of ES, a visit to Japan by representatives of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and journalists is also planned in the framework of it.

During the years of cooperation with Japan, many employees of the Ministry of ES of RA were sent to Japan for training and exchange of experience.
