Sweden and Armenia are forming a tradition of continuous cooperation

Thirty-two years after the devastating Spitak earthquake in 1988, the Swedish Emergency Management Agency (MSB) has returned to Armenia to support the development of a population protection system at the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

“I am proud to be part of this mission. Ministry of Emergency Situations as our partner in Armenia has expressed a desire to implement this program, which is a possible factor in developing the capabilities of the Ministry. I look forward to learning and developing this process in the field of population protection”,- said John Andersen, Resident Twinning Advisor which was sent to Armenia by the Swedish Emergency Management Agency to lead the implementation of the program.

According to the Deputy Director of the Rescue Service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, Colonel Hovhannes Yemishyan it is symbolic to announce the launch of this new Twinning program in the field of population protection and disaster risk management on the Memorial Day of the Spitak earthquake: “We appreciate the opportunity of this cooperation with our Swedish-Lithuanian partners to strengthen resilience and increase readiness in Armenia”,- said the Colonel.

The duration of the program is two years. It consists of three main components:

• Improvement of the legal framework of population protection;
• Improvement of the efficiency of a comprehensive population protection system;
• Capacity building to ensure the effectiveness of human resource management and development.
