The test of ‘going under the people’s sword’

June 16,2021 11:01

The acting Prime Minister said that everyone must “go under the people’s sword,” and if they don’t, they will have a bad future. By “everyone,” Pashinyan meant the bureaucracy, local government leaders, business owners, professors, scientists, spiritual leaders, and diplomats- everyone who is not a supporter of the current acting prime minister.

Suppose it happens that way: the “people” will draw their swords and make everyone, to put it mildly, bow down. However, there are questions to be clarified here. Let’s admit that 300 thousand people will vote for Pashinyan, 250 thousand people for Kocharyan, 2-3 tens of thousands for all other political forces. Does this mean that what we mean by “Armenian people” is those 300,000, and those who voted otherwise, those who did not vote, and 7 million Armenians are not “people?” The majority of voters, yes, have the right to form a government, but I think they can not privatize the name “people.”

But, let’s consider that my opinion is wrong, and the “people” are truly those 300,000 individuals. How will the test of “going under the people’s sword” take place technically? I think that it is impossible for those 300 or 500 thousand people to issue sentences every day- “You, respected professor, have passed under our sword, but you, holy father, have not.” Therefore, the people need to delegate someone or some group to carry out that “test.” Who should be that “investigator” – the NSS? The Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sport? A parliamentary inquiry commission? Maybe the Prime Minister should personally examine everyone’s case (what other important things does he have to do)? Or maybe we will put the responsibility of holding them “under the sword”on some pro-government NGO. I think it will be possible to get a good grant for it. Or, finally, there is another possibility: create a special structure, for example, the Ministry of Hammer, Steel, and Revolutionary Refining.

But all of us need to prepare for that “test” so that we don’t get anything wrong. I think it would have been more honest for them to have suggested a few questions or a list of claims that those who would “pass under the people’s sword” would support. In other words, fine, the group of “people.” For example, “everyone is to blame for the defeat in war, the loss of territory, and casualties besides Pashinyan,” “the only thing Pashinyan is to blame for is that Robert Kocharyan, Serzh Sargsyan, and others have not been shot,” “Armenia’s 27-year history (1991-2018) was entirely a history of theft and oppression,” etc. I believe that it is time for everyone to decide whether they are with the “people” or not. I have already made my decision.
