“I will try to refrain from commenting on Davit Tonoyan, my status does not allow me to make any additional comments”: NA Speaker

October 12,2021 18:15

At the briefing with journalists, NA Speaker Alen Simonyan did not want to comment on the statement of the lawyers of the former Minister of Defense Davit Tonoyan that their client has a large amount of information, but does not use it taking into account state secrets and national security.

Does Simonyan consider this blackmail? “I do not think that upholding the law can be considered blackmail. I will try to refrain from commenting on Mr. Tonoyan, because I can give at least two reasons: we have worked together and secondly, my status in the criminal case does not allow me to make any further comments.” In response to the question of whether as NA Speaker he can say at what stage the establishment of the commission of inquiry investigating the circumstances of the 44-day war is because after the Civil Contract session, he had announced that they had made such a decision, Alen Simonyan answered, “It can be said that we also have a funny problem here. We have MPs from both the pro-government and opposition factions who, for example, have not submitted or signed their confidential documents. I can also say that the National Assembly is still in the process of formation. There are many processes that have not been completed yet. That commission, of course, will be formed and will function.”

Alen Simonyan could not give a clear answer to the clarifying question of if it would be on the basis of the defense commission. “I cannot say,” he said.
