“The titular opposition and the government are simply fighting over who will deceive the people better”: Armen Baghdasaryan

September 02,2022 12:22

“I don’t think there has been any progress in Brussels. My impression is that no progress has taken place,” said political scientist Armen Baghdasaryan at a press conference held at the Sputnik Armenia multimedia press center, referring to the Nikol Pashinyan-Charles Michel-Ilham Aliyev meeting held in Brussels. According to him, the fact that it was agreed that the next meeting of the committee on border delimitation and border security issues will take place in Brussels in November indicates that everything is in flux. He elaborated, “If during the meeting at the end of August it is said that the next meeting will be held in November, when the events in the region and the world are developing quickly, a meeting three months later means that the process is in a state of flux.”

Referring to the arrest of the former commander of the Armed Forces, Armen Baghdasaryan noted that nothing has changed and continued, “Nikol Pashinyan’s way of working is to make everyone guilty except himself. It is doubtful to present detailed facts about who the traitor is, because of whom we were defeated. It is doubtful that the investigative committee presents such things that it does not usually present. Now new defendants have appeared. There is no change in terms of content here either. Nikol Pashinyan is not doing anything new.”

Speaking about the opposition’s way of working and commenting on the statements that the people do not gather in the square, that is the reason why there is no change, said, “The problem is not the gathering of the people. There are two main issues that the opposition should do and that it does not do. Not to deceive the society, to honestly present the situation to the people, to present his share of guilt and responsibility for the created situation, to apologize to the people. It is clear that the main culprits are these authorities and Nikol Pashinyan, but the previous ones are also guilty. There should be an honest conversation with society, they should ask for forgiveness. If society forgives them, the next step will be a more honest dialogue.

The opposition must present a clear plan of what it is going to do. What we saw was not a plan. It was perfectly acceptable harsh criticism of the government, but the truth was not being told. The titular opposition, the parliamentary opposition and the government are simply fighting over who will deceive the people better. We all know that Nikol Pashinyan deceived the public on many points, and the opposition thinks that if he deceived, he succeeded, if we deceive better, maybe we will succeed.”

Armen Baghdasaryan answered the question: Is it possible that there will be changes in domestic political life during the fall? “Any change in domestic political life will depend exclusively on foreign political and security events. It will not be possible to generate internal political processes within Armenia if there are no external impulses that will unite society. If it doesn’t happen, the political forces inside Armenia will open another rally season, then they will accuse society that they are guilty for not coming to the streets.”
