Artsakh Blockade Petition Presented to Australian House of Representatives, Awaits Response from Foreign Minister

August 08,2023 15:09

CANBERRA: The Armenian-Australian community’s petition on the Federal Parliament’s website, calling on the Australian Government to echo the sentiments of the International Court of Justice in objection of the Artsakh Blockade, was presented to the House of Representatives chamber last week, reported the Armenian National Committee of Australia (ANC-AU).

The ANC-AU petition, signed by 2,062 Australian citizens, was certified as having met the requirements for petitions at a recent House Standing Committee on Petitions meeting, therefore was presented to the most representative chamber in Australia by the committee’s Chair, Susan Templeman MP.

The petition has now been referred to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Penny Wong, who has 90 days to respond to the calls of the signatories.

“The Armenian-Australian community eagerly awaits Minister Wong’s response to the thousands of Australians, who have called on the Federal Parliament to condemn the blockade. We will continue to amplify our community’s concerns through the parliamentary procedures offered to us, and expect Canberra to rightfully stand on the side of justice and end the humanitarian catastrophe our compatriots are facing,” said ANC-AU Executive Director Michael Kolokossian.
