The independence of the Human Rights Defender’s activities must be guaranteed both in law and in practice: the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms. Manasyan met with the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Michael O’Flaherty, in Strasbourg.
On July 7, during her working visit to Strasbourg, the Human Rights Defender of the Republic of Armenia, Ms. Anahit Manasyan, met with the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Michael O’Flaherty.
During the meeting, the parties discussed the challenges in the field of human rights protection, possible ways of overcoming them, as well as the safeguards for ensuring the independent and effective functioning of National Human Rights Institutions and the importance of a safe and conducive environment for that purpose.
The importance of excluding legislative regulations and practices that create the possibility of interference with the independence of the Human Rights Defender’s institution was emphasized.

Reference was made to the challenges in the area of ensuring equality and non-discrimination, the protection of refugee rights, as well as a number of other issues related to the protection of human rights and of mutual interest.
The parties reaffirmed their readiness to further expand cooperation in the promotion and protection of human rights.
The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Michael O’Flaherty thanked Ms. Anahit Manasyan for the productive discussion and reaffirmed his readiness to continue close cooperation with the Human Rights Defender’s Office.
