On September 21, 1991, the Armenian people made a historic and unequivocal choice for independence, sovereignty, and self-determination.
Thirty-five years later, that decision remains one of the defining achievements of our modern history and a source of pride for Armenians around the world.
This anniversary comes at a consequential moment for Armenia and the Armenian people. As Armenia works to secure its sovereignty, strengthen its democracy, and build a lasting peace, we remain mindful of the profound challenges our nation has endured — including the forced displacement of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh, the continued captivity of Armenians held in Azerbaijan, and the ongoing imperative to protect Armenia’s security. We also welcome the continued strengthening of the U.S.-Armenia relationship, which the Assembly has worked to advance for more than five decades.
Across three and a half decades, shifting geopolitical realities, war, displacement, and uncertainty, the meaning of September 21 endures. Independence is more than a moment in history; it is the responsibility to safeguard Armenia’s freedom, strengthen its institutions, and ensure that future generations inherit a secure, sovereign, democratic, and prosperous homeland.
