Another “Oxeye Daisy”

December 15,2012 13:54

Now is the time for the “oxeye daisy” of the Armenian National Congress (ANC) and Levon Ter-Petrossian to nominate or not to nominate, to make a statement or not to make a statement. Untill the decision is made, websites that seek after visitors will write every other day or a few times a day, referring to reliable sources, “He has decided to nominate himself,” “He has decided not to nominate himself.” Whereas the only reliable source here is Levon Ter-Petrossian; no one, not even his closest friends can communicate reliable news; even if they leak information, it is surely their initiative, not the first president’s.

Nominating for president has become a merely personal business in our country like going to a salon or buying a sack of potatoes. I will buy it today, if I want to, I will buy it in a week, if I want to, I won’t buy it at all, if I want to; I don’t have to give explanation to anyone. Naturally, my neighbors and my relatives “treat my position with respect.” From my perspective, politics is a bit different; one should explain the logic of one’s actions here. If, certainly, he pins hopes on society, citizens and not on secret negotiations, intrigues and external signals. When the government does this, one can understand it somehow; it is going to conduct a traditional light election without violence and scandals. The main resource of the opposition, as far as I can tell, should be society’s support. Or perhaps, I am wrong, and the abilities of an oligarch who has some contradictions with the government may be its resource.

The main demerit of Levon Ter-Petrossian, the Pan-Armenian National Movement (PANM) and the Armenian National Congress (ANC) is that they never admit their mistakes. Let me give you a simple example; can’t one admit today that closing the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) was a mistake – it will have no negative impact on the current political situation? But no, that ridiculous move is justified even today. Or let me give you a fresher example; isn’t it clear today that the “prosperous” games of the ANC were pointless, and one can say, “Dear folks, we were mistaken, we made wrong calculations”? But instead, they make up legends as if a piece of the gangsters’ pyramid has broken off, and it is a result of the wise policy pursued by the ANC. Levon Ter-Petrossian, not Levon Zurabyan, who, for some reason, has been inappropriately attacked recently more than before, should admit the mistake.

But in the end, should he nominate himself or not? In my opinion, the second one is better in the current situation. The first President of Armenia, whose contribution to the state and the nation is unchallengeable, shouldn’t get 7%-10% of votes. However, the ANC should nominate its candidate. We will talk about this next time.
