The Versions Suggested by Officials May Impede the Investigation Into the Hayrikyan Case

February 04,2013 10:25

A lot of opinions are expressed on the assassination attempt on Paruyr Hayrikyan these days. Many politicians considered the incident as a politically motivated crime; there is an opinion that this is a PR action etc. www.aravot.am inquired during a conversation with human rights advocates whether such suggestions didn’t impede the work of the preliminary investigation body, limiting the possible circle of versions. Vardan Harutyunyan, the head of the Center for Freedom and Rights, said in this regard: “Only the preliminary investigation body can talk about the versions. The rest can be just rumors or fantasies. If a professional preliminary investigation

is conducted, I don’t think that they will be impeded by anything. However, it can have an impact and impede the preliminary investigation body, if the President, the National Assembly Speaker, or other powerful officials make suggestions.”

When reminded that Hovik Abrahamyan, the National Assembly Speaker, had even hinted that a political force had been behind the assassination attempt on Hayrikyan V. Harutyunyan said: “In this case, without knowing about the progress of the preliminary investigation, he directs the preliminary investigation body.”

Human rights advocate Artak Zeynalyan stated in his turn: “The preliminary investigation cannot restrict the right of people to express their opinion. Who can prevent from thinking about it or making suggestions? No one can interfere. In this case, society is interested in solving it, and they consider the preliminary investigation body as their partner. There is no aim to impede the investigation.”
