Armenia’s “historic moment”

March 13,2015 15:01

“We begin discussions on constitutional reform. This is a historic moment for us, the amended Constitution presents a new vision for the development of Armenia,” announced MA Deputy Speaker Hermine Naghdalyan, today, in the briefing with the journalists after the RPA SC session. The ruling party’s executive council session was scheduled at 20:00. It started about two hours late. The reason was that Serzh Sargsyan had a meeting with the opposition “Heritage” party members.

Prior to it, the President had met with the senior staff of ARF, RoL, PANM, Free Democrats and the United Labor Party. At the RPA SC session, today, the president together with his party members summed up the meeting held during the day. Hermine Naghdalyan conveyed the journalists that one thing is clear – the Constitutional reforms should be considered. “Participation of all political forces and professionals in the discussions is important for us.” The ruling party hopes that the discussion will lead to the formation of a complex document. “We are entering a period of reforms and we believe that they should give rise to an answer of what reform we implement and so on. As a result, we will come to a conclusion of whether we carry out the reforms and to what extent.”

To the question of why the ANC was not invited to the political debate, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly responded, “What sense to invite people to the discussion who do not see any edges for discussion”. To the observation that the PAP has always acted against, Hermine Naghdalyan noted that the PAP party, however, takes part in the discussion, adding, “Discussing, first and foremost, means to listen to one another.” She informed that tomorrow, discussions will continue to be held with professional groups and civil society representatives.
