“The text, certainly, was words of an intelligent person knowing the events of the history who can mislead with messages but at least not those who are well aware of or are following the developments during these years,” said political scientist Stepan Safaryan in an conversation with Aravot.am, referring to RA first President Levon Ter-Petrosian’s speech at the ANC congress.
He noted that what the government is doing with the nation-army notion does not form any sympathy because begging AMD 1000 cannot be an element of nation-army notion, “But if we pay attention to the three examples that he brings to all costs and argues that Armenia should not be let’s say a model of Switzerland or Israel. To try to prove at any cost that Armenia does not need a serious defense system, Armenia is not in a hostile environment as Israel or Switzerland 200 years ago, I am sorry, is at least ridiculous because the magnitude of the danger cannot be connected only with the number of enemies because you can have one enemy but an enemy with the greatest potentials. It is dubious that Ter-Petrosyan is doing everything to prove that Armenia does not need a serious defense idea and truly, the involvement of the society and the world Diaspora Armenians will be important.
To rely on begging peace and calling it a dignity and 18 years later present Karabakh as the cause of misfortunes of the nation, therefore, associate the solution of this problem a day before development of Armenia and development of Karabakh and speak about ceding territories to a neighbor that has proved with all possible and impossible forms that it is not trustworthy, and is not in favor of peace and cannot give security guarantee not only to Armenia but also to Karabakh. I am sorry but it leaves only room for making a conclusion that Levon Ter-Petrosyan is extremely sorry that he left the political arena with the accusation of betraying Karabakh.
Perhaps one thing that he should have considered positive as he had come to power for the issue of Karabakh under the motto of “Karabakh is ours” movement, consequently, any infringement or any manifestation of begging peace and capitulation would have caused this labeling. And therefore, realizing that he remains in the history as such, he is trying to present at any cost that allegedly losing an 18-year time we are facing the same proposal which could be adopted in 1998, and we could be another prosperous country now as he is presenting.

But perhaps, he forgets one thing when he starts his speech with corruption, Ter-Petrosyan must understand very well that corruption is simply the logical consequence that occurs after choking the democracy. In this sense, he has laid the foundations of distorting democracy, and he should not be amazed why corruption is born as a result of strangling and distorting democracy. This should be considered as carefully avoiding personal responsibility in the creation of this system.”
Stepan Safaryan added that a dangerous trend is visible in the speech: Levon Ter-Petrosian’s approval to the Russian plan. According to the political scientist, it is one of the most troubling aspects, “One thing is very dangerous: you see that he has just joined the Russian plan praising it, and in this sense, I see no differences between him and Ilham Aliyev who exclusive highlight Russia’s role in this dangerous phase when the Russian plan is absolutely about the capitulation of Artsakh. This is highly disturbing in Ter-Petrosian’s text because it is also an application of separation in Armenia’s political palette that now, this time, I differ from these authorities and the right thing is to deal with me.
Look, he’s doing a dangerous thing: he criticizes the entourage of Serzh Sargsyan, saying that no one has even expressed a view about concessions. In other words, he raises the current authorities onto the altar. I want one thing to be clear, irrespective of what attitude you have to a politician and the power, everything will be transient, and making dirty intrigues against each other on interpersonal affairs and raising each other onto the altar on Karabakh issue, this, I am sorry, is an undignified behavior.”
