‘No hotbed for counterrevolution in Armenia’: Edmon Marukyan

August 29,2018 15:38

The ‘Bright Armenia’ political party agrees with any method of dissolving parliament that is constitutional. Parliament member from the ‘Yelq’ alliance and President of the ‘Bright Armenia’ political party Edmon Marukyan mentioned this today in an interview with reporters in parliament.

At the gathering on August 17th, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan spoke about constitutional changes. Edmon Marukyan thinks that dissolving the parliament is one of the ways to change the constitution. If there are no changes in the constitution, the only way to have parliamentary elections is for Nikol Pashinyan to resign as Prime Minister, and for the National Assembly to not elect a new Prime Minister twice. Then, the parliament will dissolve itself.

“We agree with both solutions since the parliament has to dissolve and new elections need to be held in order for the results of the revolution to finally come to life,” Edmon Marukyan said. He thinks that having parliamentary elections is mandatory since there is no opposition or leading force in parliament currently. “The opposition force is the one that will enjoy the people’s trust, but we don’t know if the Republican Party is the one that enjoys the people’s trust or not since the Republicans labeled themselves as the opposition. Until we have elections, we won’t be free from that uncertainty.”

Speaking about counterrevolution, Edmon Marukyan stated that the revolution was against the Republican Party, but that system is no longer in power. He thinks that the Republicans have to have a counterrevolution, either alone or with Robert Kocharyan. But he doesn’t see that as a possibility now. He said, “There is no hotbed for a counterrevolution in Armenia. Neither the Republican Party nor Robert Kocharyan have a chance of returning.”
