Spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova spoke about the farewell speech American Ambassador to Armenia Richard Mills held at the American Chamber of Commerce in Armenia on October 9th.
“This speech had unique, primitive openness,” Zakharova said.
According to her, Mills said that his country’s government, more specifically the American embassy in Yerevan, has supported several Armenian groups and several Armenian politicians for decades. “The ambassador spoke about interfering in the internal affairs of another state without a hint of embarrassment; moreover, he spoke of it with pride. Apparently that can all be justified because of its purpose, which is ‘Armenia became a more just and transparent nation.’”
According to the spokeswoman, the ambassador realized later that he wasn’t saying what he needed to, and he fixed his mistake by saying that the latest political changes in Armenia took place due to internal reasons. Zakharova also said that the ambassador gave advice on how to develop the economy of Armenia and how to make the political system work. “Let’s all decide whether interfering in the affairs of other countries is bad or good,” Zakharova emphasized.
