Acting Minister of Justice Artak Zeynalyan visited Nairi Hunanyan, who was accused of the murders of October 27th. On October 27, 1999, a group led by Nairi Hunanyan shot and killed members of parliament, most notably Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan and Speaker of the National Assembly Karen Demirchyan. Vazgen Sargsyan, commonly referred to as Sparapet (Commander), was an influential figure in the Artsakh Liberation War and credited with forming the independent Armenian Army. There is much controversy surrounding the tragedy and who its perpetrators were.
Zeynalyan spoke to reporters about this during a meeting. “I saw him in his cell and spoke to him privately. I can announce this because I have the right to do so,” Zeynalyan said, noting that he cannot give any more details. “But I can say that I advised him to get involved with sports,” the acting minister added. He told Nairi Hunanyan this because Hunanyan gained weight.
Zeynalyan, speaking about his future activities, said, “Whether or not I will remain depends on the Prime Minister’s decision, who is voted for according to the political majority.” Zeynalyan said that it will become clear soon who will be the Minister of Justice.
