The EU promotes the use of sustainable energy in Armenia: new biogas plant and greenhouse in Gegharkunik

Within the framework of the EU-supported “Integrated Support for Sustainable Economic Development in Rural Mountainous Areas of Armenia” project, the opening ceremony of a large biogas plant and a greenhouse was held today in Geghamasar community of Gegharkunik region.

The event was one of many EU initiatives on energy efficiency within the EU Sustainable Energy Week in 2019 that feature Sustainable Energy Days in Armenia through youth events, intellectual quests, painting competitions, seminars and lectures, inaugurals of solar photovoltaic power plants, biogas plant launch, sustainable greenhouse opening and many more exciting events.

Representatives from the national and local government, project partners and implementers, stakeholders and residents of Geghamasar community were present at the event. Gnel Sanosyan, RA Governor of Gegharkunik region was also present at the event.

“We are happy to mark the closing of “Integrated Support for Sustainable Economic Development in Rural Mountainous Areas of Armenia” project with such important results as the establishment of the biogas plant and opening of the greenhouse. During the energy week 2019 we’ve had sustainable energy days throughout Armenia to set a leading example to prioritize energy efficiency not only in the fight for climate change but promoting the use of renewable energy through innovative technologies”, mentioned International Aid/Cooperation Officer at the EU Delegation to Armenia Andrea Baggioli in his opening remarks.

The project aims at contributing to local economic growth by increasing regional competitiveness and creating sustainable jobs in Geghamasar, Areguni, Pambak, Shaki, Shaghat, Angeghakot beneficiary villages.
