June 29,2020 20:12

EU NEIGHBOURS . Following the devastating floods in the south-west of Ukraine last week, the EU continues to mobilise emergency assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The recent intensive rains resulted in the largest flooding in the south-west of Ukraine in the last 50 years, with several casualties and hundreds of homes damaged.

On 29 June, an airplane of the Italian government delivered pumping equipment, personal safety material, chainsaws, power generators and tents to the affected region.

Over the weekend, Sweden committed to sending 1.2 kilometres of flood barrier, 250 hoses as well as technical experts. In addition to the assistance from Italy and Sweden, the European Commission is providing mapping services of the affected areas through the EU programme ‘Copernicus’.

The EU’s 24/7 Emergency Response Coordination Centre is in constant contact with Ukrainian authorities, monitoring the situation and channelling further assistance on request.
