‘My children were sleeping next to me and now they’re gone’: Woman living at Raynis 3 asks for help

According to preliminary information, as a result of an explosion that took place at the apartment building on Raynis 3 in Yerevan at 7 AM on August 26, 12 people were wounded. At the time this was written, 2 people were rescued from the rubble and taken to the hospital.

The mayor of Yerevan Hayk Marutyan and deputy mayor Kamo Areyan were at the site. Before that, the Prime Minister and the Minister of Emergency Situations had also visited the site of the explosion.

The mayor told Aravot Daily that a gas leak took place on the second floor according to preliminary information, which resulted in the explosion. It is difficult to say how many people were affected.

According to Hayk Marutyan, aside from the people who were removed from the rubble, firefighters had heard noises from other people and were continuing the search.

He also said that they are preparing to evacuate the residents, after which they will calculate the total cost of damages. He was unable to say whether or not the building was an emergency.

One of the residents, Vladimir Simonyan, told Aravot Daily that they experienced terror earlier in the morning. One woman had been heartbroken and calling for help. “The woman was begging for us to remove her from the cages. She said that her children were sleeping next to her, but now they were gone.”
