There can be no question of anti-Armenian steps by Georgia: Turkish affairs expert

September 24,2020 16:00

Turkish affairs expert Taron Hovhannisyan does not see any anti-Armenian steps by Georgia when Georgia banned the supply of weapons to Armenia from taking place on its territory.

The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, praised the fact that the Georgian government did not allow the transit of military cargo from Russia and Serbia to Armenia through Georgian territory. Ilham Aliyev mentioned this in his statement according to “Georgia Online.”

According to the Turkish affairs expert, this refers to the ban on the flight of 76 cargo planes of the Russian Armed Forces from Russia to Armenia in July and August of this year, which the Azerbaijani side presented as a transfer of weapons to Armenia. However, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that it was only a rotation of Russian soldiers. They also were going to bring new soldiers to the Russian military base in Gyumri. The flight also included construction materials for the military base.

“As for the route, those planes flew through Central Asia and Iran and came to Armenia. In general, there can be no question of any anti-Armenian step by Georgia because Georgia, regardless of whether it is going to Armenia or somewhere else, does not allow Russia to transfer military equipment due to Russian-Georgian relations. Before that, the Azerbaijani side blamed Georgia because weapons from Serbia was transported across Georgian territory. It’s not as though weapons are not coming to Armenia through Georgia,” Taron Hovhannisyan said.

Regarding the latest statements made by Aliyev, the Turkish affairs expert noted that the statements can be seen as a call to prepare for war. “Yes, these statements may have been made within the framework of military provocations as an information component to prepare for a military provocation. After suffering a serious loss in July, aside from firing Mammadyarov, Azerbaijan also withdrew from the negotiations process. Azerbaijan continues to toughen its rhetoric in order to save its reputation. It is not possible to predict when these military operations will take place, the scale of these operations, and whether or not they will take place in the near future.”
