How the European Convention on Human Rights is advancing equality for LGBTI people

The Council of Europe’s Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Unit, in co-operation with the European Court of Human Rights, is organising a conference to mark the 70th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights. Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni and Marialena Tsirli, Registrar-elect of the Court, will open the event, which is entitled “A ‘Living Instrument’ for Everyone: The Role of the European Convention on Human Rights in Advancing Equality for LGBTI persons”. Robert Spano, President of the Court, will deliver a keynote message to the participants.

The conference will highlight progress achieved in equality for LGBTI persons in Europe through the European Convention mechanism. Judges and lawyers of the European Court and the Department for the Execution of Judgments of the ECHR, prominent academics and civil society activists, representatives of equality bodies will discuss the impact of the landmark judgments of the Court on the legislation and practices in larger Europe. Notably, there will be analysis of the judgments in the cases of Christine Goodwin v. the UK on the legal gender recognition for transgender persons; Oliari and Others v. Italy on the recognitions and protection of same-sex civil unions; as well as Beizaras and Levickas v. Lithuania and Lilliendahl v. Iceland on online hate speech directed at LGBTI persons.

The conference will take place on Thursday, 8 October, from 9h20 to 15h10 local time. The conference will be steamed online in English and French. A recording of the event will be made available later on the Court’s website.
