Azerbaijan’s and Turkey’s goal is not only the eradication of Armenians from Artsakh; they also seek the eradication of Armenians from the Republic of Armenia. For the most part, the United States and Europe are not concerned with who lives here. Russia does not want Armenians to be removed from the area because it will mean a great world political loss for them. In this case, our interests and Russia’s interests correspond. However, Russia does not want there to be independent states in the South Caucasus even if those states will have positive relations with Russia. One of the steps in that direction is bringing in “peacekeepers” to “calm” Armenia and Azerbaijan. That is not a product of my imagination; all influential politicians in Russia speak about that, including in interviews they had with me.
