Determining the status of Nagorno Karabakh requires more negotiations – Russia’s Federation Council Speaker

December 24,2020 19:31

Public Radio of Armenia. Russia does not intervene in internal conflicts in the CIS countries, but is ready to provide support and assistance if requested, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko said at a press conference on Thursday, TASS reports.

“We are always ready to provide assistance, support if asked, but we do not impose our point of view, we do not try to subvert any actions, influence this or that situation, although we know and understand well that many processes, including in the post-Soviet space, are taking place with the obvious intervention of a number of states,” Matviyenko said.

She said determining the status of Nagorno-Karabakh requires additional negotiations, and Russia counts on the efforts of the presidents of France and the United States in this matter.

“The status of Nagorno-Karabakh is outside the brackets, this requires additional negotiations. We certainly count on the efforts of the OSCE, the President of France, the United States and other states that are involved in the process of the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement. There is still a very difficult work to do,” Matviyenko said.

According to her, this conflict “smoldered, flared up, lasted more than thirty years, and no solution was found.”

“We stopped the victims, did not allow further escalation of the conflict, new human casualties. It was a very difficult agreement, it was very difficult to achieve it. Believe me, I know that these are days and nights of hard, tense conciliation work. Today, it is the Russian peacekeepers in the conflict zone that keep this agreement, do not allow violating its terms, contribute to the establishment of a peaceful life, the return of refugees,” added the Federation Council speaker.

“Today, the peacekeepers of Russia are perceived by both sides, as well as by the residents of Azerbaijan and Armenia, as an effort by the fraternal people to assist in the final settlement of this conflict,” Matviyenko said.
