“The recent war showed that the Armenian authorities are being coerced”: Seyran Ohanyan

October 06,2021 14:15

“Under the thesis of peace, Armenia will find itself in the illusion of peace presented by Azerbaijan. We do not have the legal basis, the military-political situation in Armenia and the region, or the maps that will be the basis for clarifying the borders. In this situation, signing a peace agreement with Azerbaijan means recognizing the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, which will be a great blow to the Republic of Artsakh and its people,” said Seyran Ohanyan, head of the Armenia faction and former Minister of Defense.

Referring to the statements of the President of Azerbaijan on the possible meeting between Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev, Seyran Ohanyan said that after the last Artsakh war, the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev is in a more favorable position to demand and coerce. “He dictates the agenda, it is obvious, because the statements of November 9 and January 11 signed after the hostilities forced Armenia to” stop the war and hand over a part of Artsakh to Azerbaijan. Besides, certain strategic points, heights, and roads from the borders of Armenia were handed over to Azerbaijan,” Ohanyan said.

Seyran Ohanyan said that when it comes to border security and the process of further clarification in the future, different citizens mentioned the law on administrative-territorial divisions, the main emphasis of which is the internal border clarifications of the Republic of Armenia, not external ones. “The Armenian authorities should have understood that especially in the borders of Syunik, we should not move back from where we stood. Aliyev’s slanders and rhetoric are aimed at forcing Armenia to establish contact with Nakhichevan within the framework of opening its borders, unblocking roads and forming a corridor for the realization of their long-term goals, and later also Central Asia.”

Seyran Ohanyan does not know what Armenia should negotiate with Azerbaijan from such a position, he said that Nikol Pashinyan should be asked what his agenda is.  “Everyone is in favor of peace in the region, but we need the conditions for peace. The rhetoric of the Azerbaijani and Turkish leaderships is aimed at putting pressure on the Armenian leadership. In this regard, the Armenian leadership must do serious work both in the formation of our security system and in conducting smart negotiations in the international arena,” Seyran Ohanyan said, adding that the experience of recent years and the recent war have shown that the Armenian authorities are being coerced, but we need people who can negotiate and who are not under coercion, and in that sense the Armenian authorities are in a very bad situation today.
