“Active observers” and “moral supporters”

January 03,2023 10:22

“Our security allies (Russia and CSTO) left us alone, preferring to remain passive observers or offer active observer status. But we were not alone in the world. And I want to thank those countries (presumably, France – AA) and international organizations, which were not indifferent to this situation,” Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made this statement in his New Year’s speech. The assessment is correct, and the “active observer” quip is apt. If it was an ordinary journalist’s speech/article, all that would be left is to like it or write an “I agree” comment. But the author of the words is the head of the state, whose actions and words depend on the fate of 3 million people living in RA and 120 thousand people besieged in Artsakh.

The whole problem is that the “allies,” who have an obligation and do not fulfill it, are at least theoretically able to open the Berdzor Corridor and counter Azerbaijan’s aggression on the borders of Armenia. The countries and international organizations that sympathize with us can only support us morally (as they supported us in 1915). France cannot and does not want to send troops to the borders of Armenia, even more so to the Berdzor corridor. In general, that country and the EU will never impose sanctions on Azerbaijan, which sells gas to them.

Moreover, France still needed to hold a statement in the UN Security Council calling for the opening of the Berdzor corridor. Among the permanent members of the UN Security Council, Great Britain, which has business interests in Azerbaijan and Artsakh, and Russia, which has trade with Turkey, defeated that document. To be honest, even if France adopted such a statement, it couldn’t solve the problem.

So, joining the thanks for the “moral support,” I want to suggest that our authorities work with Russia. Not to complain, scold, get upset and curse through his preachers, but to work.
