How to Live Without a Leg

August 13,2025 11:00

My colleague Nikolay Torosyan offers a striking comparison: A person completely neglects their health—drinking, smoking, eating unhealthy food all day. Eventually, they develop thrombosis, and the leg must be amputated. Afterward, the people around them start exclaiming in admiration: “Oh, what a brilliant solution, what a wise decision to amputate the leg!”

Building on this analogy, we can note that the government’s propaganda brigade insists that “amputating the leg”—in other words, signing documents in Washington—was our latest “success story,” after which a carefree and happy life supposedly awaits us. Yet it was their conduct—above all, that of their leader and idol—between 2020 and 2025 that brought about this “happy ending.” Just as the inevitable outcome of the incompetence and irresponsibility of 2018–2020 was the tripartite statement of November 9—another “success story,” so to speak.

In short, according to the government, living without a leg is a blessing. And what does the opposition say? The opposition suggests that under certain “special circumstances,” the leg will grow back—something just as impossible as the “eternal peace” promised by the government.

The sad, shameful, and disgraceful fact is that the damage has already been done. Political forces must answer a pressing question: how can we live under these drastically worsened security conditions? Specifically, is it possible to ensure that the so-called “unimpeded corridor” will not deepen Armenia’s current transport blockade—one that Turkey and Azerbaijan have no intention of lifting? If preparations are underway, then why is there not a single word about it in the “wonderful” and “unparalleled” Washington documents? And as for preventing the threat of a southern blockade—that question remains entirely unanswered.

For seven years now, the government has lied—starting with “Artsakh is Armenia, and that’s it” and ending with “the security and rights of Karabakh Armenians.” There is no doubt that their current talk of peace and lifting the blockade is yet another lie. If this government stays in power, the outcome will clearly follow the worst-case scenario. What remains unclear is what scenario the opposition has to offer.
