The list of people nominated for the majoritarian representation and endorsed by the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) has made a controversial impression. On one side, there is, for example, Mher of Tokhmakh whose entourage and inclinations are well-known. Endorsing such a candidate can mean only one thing – the establishment will use the criminal resource in the Erebuni community of Yerevan to reach success. There are a few other figures on the list like that and certainly, it would be better, if no party pinned its hopes on such people. However, new figures from the political perspective have appeared next to famous underworld leaders and oligarchs. I know a part of them personally, as a part of my job, in particular, and I have never had any reason to doubt those persons’ dignity. They cannot be button-pushers, nor else will they do it instead of others.
Naturally, Viktor Dalakyan on that list will be a target of attacks. However, if we approach the issue emotionally, it is in the interest of the RPA to have an educated man being well-aware of the legislative technique. Therefore, the deal is, so to say, mutually beneficial. Certainly, one can claim that the political and economic system in our country with its drawbacks will not change thanks to a certain MP’s dignity or skillfulness. However, it is less likely to change through street noise and pointless threats made against the above-mentioned criminalized leaders.
Generally one can agree with Ashot Manucharyan who says that the upcoming struggle will be not between parties, but types of people. As a citizen, I would like very much if intellectuals like Levon Zurabyan, Avetis Avagyan and Arman Musinyan appeared in the National Assembly. But it doesn’t mean that I fully like the expected ANC list. There are people there who, being in power, proved to be exactly like Mher of Tokhmakh. It is clear that there will be people from both the establishment and the opposition who will represent different types. It will be clear soon which one will prevail.
Of course, making singer Shushan Petrosyan a target of criticism will also yield political points. Her decision to join the RPA list was controversial, there is no denying. However, when one sees what level of intellect those who criticize her show, he becomes convinced that they are surely of the “wrong” type.
