There is a panic in the society. The reason is that the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia recruits males of different ages. So notices are sent, by which they ask males of different ages, even those who have completed compulsory military service, to come to military registration and enlistment offices.
During a conversation with Artsrun Hovhannisyan, the press secretary of the Ministry of Defense, www.aravot.am tried to find out whether such recruitment had something to do with the tensions in the relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan recently. Mr. Hovhannisyan explained, “The Compulsory Military Service Act mentions till what age a
person is compelled to serve. The two-year service is only a part of compulsory service. Therefore, the person is compelled to serve till he has exceeded the age of compulsory service and as a reservist, he may participate in this or that operation. And operations carried out in the Republic of Armenia presently are not novel, people are summoned, some things are clarified and they participate in this or that operation for a day or two. Basically, the operations that are carried out are normal and appropriate. Demobilized soldiers and former freedom fighters whose experience and skills are important for us are called up. On the one hand, they share their experience with temporary servicemen, on the other hand, they get acquainted with the modern technology. Therefore, there is no need for panic and this is not related to greater danger of war. There have always been such operations.”
