Former Deputy Police Chief of Yerevan, Robert Melkonyan, is in disbelief over the fact that former Police Chief Hayk Harutyunyan committed suicide. According to Melkonyan, nothing could have caused Harutyunyan to feel motivated to do such a thing. Hayk Harutyunyan was a witness in the March 1st case.
Seda Safaryan, who is a lawyer representing descendants of those who were victims in the March 1st events, said, “Hayk Harutyunyan was one of the organizers of these events and the operative group was formed as a result of the efforts of Hayk Harutyunyan and others. He was well aware of what happened on March 1st. Of course, when people say that the events that took placed in the morning were fixed and they do not have any proportionality, Hayk Harutyunyan was responsible for all of that. He was also responsible for the fact that he created the impression within his division that there was a need for organizing such events. Hayk Harutyunyan said during the committee meeting that he was aware of Robert Kocharyan’s event, which shows that everything has a direct connection to Robert Kocharyan. So, as a result of actions carried out by Hayk Harutyunyan, Robert Kocharyan, and other high-ranking officials, the events that took place in the morning and evening of March 1st commenced.”
Several days ago, the Prosecutor General’s office issued a statement that large-scale theft and corruption were uncovered during the construction of the Armavir Penitentiary. At the time, the administrative head of the penitentiaries was Hayk Harutyunyan.
