‘It is just shameful’: Kocharyan’s son on Constitutional Court situation

October 21,2019 20:14

“I have come to support these men. I think that what’s happening is very clear among all of this illegality…,” second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan’s son, Levon Kocharyan, told reporters during the appeals investigation trial for Robert Kocharyan’s supporters, Sargis Ohanjanyan and Narek Mutafyan.

Levon Kocharyan said that he agrees with the defense’s position that the young individuals are facing political persecution.

Narek Mutafyan and Sargis Ohanjanyan had approached the judge in charge of Kocharyan’s case, Anna Danibekyan, and filmed her while asking questions. A criminal case was opened based on the law about showing disrespect toward the court. The First Instance Court upheld the investigator’s mediation to arrest Mutafyan and Ohanjanyan.

Levon Kocharyan said, “They say that these men were obstructions to justice. I think that’s just absurd. What kind of obstacle could they have been if they simply approached her, asked her questions, did not insult her, and repeated a quote from the Prime Minister? This did not take place during a trial. But they do not consider the fact that the entire leadership of the country considered the Constitutional Court’s decision on my father’s deterrence method to be ‘illegal.’ This is a direct obstruction to justice, not to mention blocking courts and pushing judges. There is a clear goal: they stand next to judges who make pleasant decisions, but anything can happen to judges who are not obedient; they file criminal cases, take away their licenses…”

Regarding the process for removing Constitutional Court President Hrayr Tovmasyan from authority, Levon Kocharyan said, “Does anyone doubt that, if the Constitutional Court made an unpleasant decision on September 4th, none of this would have happened? Pressure against the Constitutional Court began when it was clear that Judge Davit Grigoryan stopped the trial on the March 1st case in May and sent it to the Constitutional Court. They understood then that the Constitutional Court is not under their authority, which is when all of this started. It’s just shameful, what else can I say? I believe that everyone will have to pay in the end for all of this illegality.”
