What does the opposition want?

December 12,2020 11:53

In Armenia, as well as in all other countries where democratic institutions operate even for show, a struggle exists between the authorities and the opposition. There is nothing strange about the fact that those in power do everything to maintain their positions.

I do not think that the current authorities have any moral right to stay in power given the current situation in Armenia. But I understand that saying something like that is a fantasy. Usually, people maintain their power as long as possible, as they honestly believe that there is no one on earth who can govern better than they can.

The opposition, then, is also trying to come to power by bringing forth convincing or not-so-convincing arguments. However, once again, if we are to speak about the current situation, then I think that the opposition needs to reevaluate its strategy. It needs to clarify the way, the mechanisms, and the constitutional article with which it will come to power. If the new government is not formed in accordance with the law, then it will be just as useless as the current inept and failed government. Only the legitimate new government will be able to bring the state out of this disastrous situation.

The government’s legal routes include the Prime Minister’s resignation (either willingly or at the initiative of the National Assembly), the election of a new Prime Minister by the parliament, after which a new government will be formed. This route seems unrealistic right now. Therefore, the opposition, I believe, needs to fight not only for some confusing “national savior government,” but also for snap parliamentary elections. The logic can be as follows: if the government is convinced that the citizens trust it after everything that has happened, let the government initiate elections and once again receive the citizens’ vote. That will be a great test for the authorities, the opposition, and for society as a whole.

For example, I believe that Pashinyan and his team failed in an embarrassing manner in all areas (not only militarily), which is why I will not vote for My Step in the upcoming snap or regular elections. But I am only one person out of three million. Therefore, it is not impossible that the majority of my fellow citizens believe that the current government worked excellently, and its only flaw was that it did not shoot Robert Kocharyan and Serzh Sargsyan. That, in any case, is not a marginal opinion; even people in my immediate circle and employees at Aravot Daily have that opinion. If the majority of voters also think that way, then Pashinyan and My Step will remain in power after the new elections are held.

Well, in that case, we must wait patiently for a new tragedy.
