“The problem is that the corridor regions of Berdzor and Karvachar were handed over to Azerbaijan. This causes a problem because Armenia and Artsakh were able to develop a joint economy over the past 20 years in those territories where there are factories and water resources. Russian peacekeepers have also been deployed on the border with Syunik, and this fact should be emphasized,” Russian State Duma deputy Konstantin Zatulin said during an online discussion organized by the Union of Armenians in Russia regarding the incidents that took place at the borders of the Syunik province.
“The borders of independent Armenia must be protected not only in Syunik, but everywhere else. Our border guards already have positions in Syunik that did not exist in the past because it was the corridor between Armenia and Artsakh, so there was no need for this. But, believe me, I am also concerned about the desire to open a corridor along the Armenian border. If Baku is celebrating its victory and remembering Enver Pasha, I do not think it is right or logical to implement the points of the trilateral agreement because many of them have been violated. If that agreement states that economic corridors need to be opened between Turkey and Azerbaijan via Armenia, then it is possible, but in an entirely different situation. If this situation does not exist, then this becomes a problem, and I personally wouldn’t be in a hurry,” Zatulin stressed.
He noted that delimitation has not occurred in the Syunik area, and the Russian peacekeeping mission needs to implement it in a manner that would ensure that neither side has an advantage to do as they wish, which is what happened in Hadrut. “All violations must be countered. Otherwise, the peacekeeping mission will not be effective.”
