‘Azerbaijan and Turkey are merging’: Konstantin Zatulin

June 25,2021 12:02

“Appreciate the fact that Shushi was chosen for the anti-Armenian agreement, which until recently was a hot spot for fighting”

“Although Russia is mentioned in it only once as a factor of the Russian-Turkish joint center, it is clear that being connected by the threads of military and economic cooperation with Armenia within the EEU and CSTO, Russia can not do anything but appreciate the fact that Shushi was chosen for the anti-Armenian agreement, which until recently was a hot spot for fighting.” “Turkey has always had its interests in the South Caucasus, and if we lived in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, I would say they are largely against the interests of the Russian Empire,” Konstantin Zatulin, a member of the Russian State Duma and head of the CIS Institute, said in response to Aravot Daily’s question during the Yerevan-Moscow video bridge on the topic “Elections in Armenia: A View from Moscow” held at the Sputnik Armenia Press Hall.

We asked the deputy how he assesses the Turkish-Azerbaijani agreement signed in Shushi and what will be the growing Turkish influence in the region. According to Konstantin Zatulin, cooperation between Turkey and Russia is currently developing in different spheres. But I would not say that it means that the national interests of the two countries coincide. I view the signing of the Shushi agreement on the 15th of this month from the point of view that Azerbaijan is considered to be Turkey’s guide to progress in the South Caucasus region. Thus, Azerbaijan is paying its debts to Turkey that it took on during the hostilities, both in the form of money and military equipment and instructors. Today, in fact, it is difficult for a non-specialist to distinguish between where Turkey ends and where Azerbaijan begins, based on the Shushi agreement.”

The agreement envisages military-political cooperation. According to the speaker, any encroachment by a third party, according to the agreement, is perceived against the interests of the two countries. They did not hesitate to mention Armenia, “Armenian occupation” in it, they celebrated their victory, and Azerbaijan signed any steps taken to recognize the genocide of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire.

“In other words, it is clear that Azerbaijan and Turkey are merging and laying an obvious mine. Although they state that their cooperation is not aimed at a third country, it is obvious that it is an anti-Armenian agreement and, of course, it is clear that being connected by the threads of military and economic cooperation with Armenia within the EEU and CSTO, Russia can not do anything but appreciate the fact that Shushi was chosen for the anti-Armenian agreement, which until recently was a hot spot for fighting.”
