Armenian Assembly of America Opposes Hill-Sponsored Event Undermining U.S. Policy
Washington, D.C. – The Armenian Assembly of America is deeply troubled by reports of a June 24 event at the U.S. Capitol organized by the Baku Initiative Group (which, according to their website, is based in Azerbaijan).
This event should not be viewed in isolation. It comes in the aftermath of the ethnic cleansing of more than 120,000 indigenous Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh), the continued detention of Armenian hostages in Baku, and ongoing efforts to erase, revise, or distort the historical realities that led to the destruction of one of the world’s oldest Christian Armenian communities.
The Assembly is concerned that initiatives of this nature risk legitimizing narratives that deny or minimize the suffering of displaced Armenians and distract from the urgent humanitarian and human rights issues that remain unresolved. At a time when Armenian hostages remain detained and displaced Armenians remain unable to return safely to their homes, Congressional attention should be focused on accountability, and the pursuit of a just and lasting peace.
