Do Not Forget the Armenian Prisoners Held in Azerbaijan: An Urgent Appeal to the World

July 15,2026 10:30

Vicken Euljekjian, who returned from Azerbaijani captivity wrote on Facebook:

“With deep pain and a heavy heart, I am speaking today for the Armenian prisoners who remain in captivity in Azerbaijan.

I know their suffering because I lived through it myself. I spent 5 years and 2 months in Azerbaijani captivity. Only those who have experienced captivity can truly understand what happens behind those closed doors — the fear, the uncertainty, the physical and psychological suffering, and the loneliness of being separated from your family and the world.

I was there. I know what it means to wake up every day without knowing when freedom will come. I know the pain of watching your health deteriorate while the outside world does not see the truth.

I personally witnessed the condition of my fellow prisoner Ludvik Mkrtchyan, who was suffering with serious health problems. I know what happened to us during those years. My own health was severely damaged after five years of captivity. My body and my spirit carry the scars of that time.

While I was imprisoned, my family was told that everything was fine and that there were no serious problems. But after my release, the world saw the reality — my health condition, my suffering, and the consequences of those years.

Today I ask the international community:

Who truly knows the condition of the Armenians who are still in captivity? Who can guarantee that they are safe and receiving proper medical care?

Silence can cost lives. These people are fathers, sons, brothers, and human beings who deserve dignity, protection, and freedom.

I call upon international organizations, human rights defenders, and every person who believes in justice: Do not forget them. Raise your voice for them. Demand transparency, humane treatment, and their immediate return to their families.
I was one of them. I know their pain. That is why I cannot remain silent.

May all Armenian prisoners return home safely, and may their families finally know peace.”
