Vazgen Sargsyan’s Brother Was Not Invited to the Congress of the Union of Yerkrapah Volunteers (UYV)

February 20,2012 16:29

Aram Sargsyan, Vazgen Sargsyan’s brother and the leader of the Republic Party, was not invited to the regular congress of the Union of Yerkrapah volunteers on Saturday. Mr. Sargsyan told about that during a conversation with Aravot.am, when we tried to get comments on why he hadn’t participated in that congress, “I am a member of the Union of Yerkrapah Volunteers, I have always been invited, made statements, always had good relations with all members. I have been friends with many of them and respect them till now. I haven’t been invited to this congress. This is the first congress that I haven’t been invited to, but I am not offended by that. Not at all.”

We asked Mr. Sargsyan to also comment on UYV executive committee chairman Manvel Grigoryan’s statement that the members of UYV were ready to die for Serzh Sargsyan, if necessary, whereas Levon Ter-Petrossian, the first president of the Republic of Armenia, stated that General Manvel was with the people in the square during the February rallies in 2008, “I notice some developments. Being very close to the UYV myself, I have never said that the UYV is with me or will support me in the political processes. Today the UYV support Serzh Sargsyan, as their comrade-in-arms, tomorrow the UYV may support me – I am their comrade-in-arms too, am I not? Therefore, the issue is the NGO – there is the word Volunteers after the word Yerkrapah in that organization’s name and that everyone presents that defense individually, decides individually, voluntarily makes decisions. Therefore, I think the processes are quite normal. They are my friends and I will never be offended with them.”

In response to our question, Mr. Sargsyan also said that his family members – his father, mother and younger brother – were invited and were present at the UYV congress. By the way, Armen Sargsyan was elected a member of the UYV executive committee. In that regard, Aram Sargsyan observed, “Armen has been a member of three UYV executive committees and I think this is the fourth time that he has been reelected. Vazgen Sargsyan is the eternal chairman of the UYV, regardless of who will be the chairman of the UYV or who will lead that NGO in the future – I am talking about 30-40-50 years from now. All the same, Vazgen will remain the eternal chairman of that organization, I have no doubt in that. In this context, I think the fact that Armen is a member of the executive committee is quite natural. Armen is not a politician, he does not interfere with political processes, he is not a candidate for an MP, he always avoids making statements on political processes and it is also my wish that he remains like that. He treats all people who travelled at least a half-hour road with my brother Vazgen with great respect and if he can help them in any way, he does.”
