“One Should Assess It Both Legally and Politically,” Hovhannes Sahakyan Says About Mher Sedrakyan’s Incident

Aravot.am asked Hovhannes Sahakyan, the secretary of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) parliamentary group, to comment on the incident between Mher Sedrakyan and a journalist during a briefing with journalists today. He assured that he was not aware of the incident, “I think that if there are such facts, Mher Arshakyan can report to law-enforcement bodies. Anyway, if such a fact really happened, it should be legally assessed.”

In response to our question whether it would be correctly assessed, given whom it was about, he said: “I am convinced that a correct assessment will be made, because there is no reason why it should be doubted, if there is a respective fact. We should follow the process.”

When asked whether there nonetheless were people in the RPA who had broken someone’s jaw in the past, he said: “Let us consider the question rhetoric or having certain political overtones. I think my and my colleagues’ attitude toward journalists is rather positive.”

In response to our question whether it was possible to make the MP vacate his seat through public activism or journalistic solidarity, he said: “Unfortunately, the activism of civil society is sometimes for personal benefit and interest. If there is a fact, I think civil society should not look on, if it is not for personal benefit.”

In response to our question whether one could draw a conclusion from this incident that Mher Sedrakyan hadn’t understood the words of the President of the Republic of Armenia that there would be no impunity in Armenia from now on, and it would a thing of the past correctly, he said that since he was not aware of the incident, he deemed inappropriate to talk about it.

Journalists also inquired whether he would have talked about that in the same way, if it hadn’t been mentioned whom it was about from the beginning, he assured that all colleagues were equal for him, “If we consider it from the perspective of parliamentary groups, it doesn’t matter whether he represents the RPA or any other political team. If there is such a thing, we should make also a political assessment, if it really corresponds to the reality.”
