Short-term tactical defect

June 21,2016 11:09

The political parties in Armenia are of three types: 1/ the ruling party (PANM, now RPA). It is a group whose goal to put it simply is to “eat,” 2/ the satellites of the ruling party (they were different at different times), whose goal is to “benefit indirectly”, and 3/ the opposition (again, variable). The latter is saying the same thing over 25 years, “soon, in a few hours, a few days or a few months, we will take power and will provide happy and better life for our people.” A question, “Why would the life become happy?” An answer, “Why? Because these ones are thieves and robbers while we are honest, decent, and loyal people to the nation. Soon, we would say such serious and piercing words addressed to the authorities that the people will be stirred up, will come out to the streets and we will implement a regime change.”

This is Armenia’s political system over 25 years, which provides more or less a quiet life to all three groups because the first two like to “eat”, the third one likes voicing the following words from the parliamentary and other tribunes (“white genocide,” “worse that Turks,” “treason,” “the country is destroyed”), and the majority of citizens like to listen to these words as a pill to the heart. Under this system, the situation is truly getting worse, both economically and in the foreign policy.

The opposition and the majority of the society cherish hope with short-term strategy: rapidly substituting “thieves and robbers” with “honest people.” Perhaps, it is necessary to approach the issue differently. Imagine, a political party is coming and saying, “Whether I am a good guy or a bad guy, loyal to the nation or not, you, my dear citizens, have nothing to do with it. I am not particularly interested whether the current ruling authorities are good guys or bad. You just listen to what I offer to change the system. For example, I offer to reduce the tax burden on income and to add the burden of expenditure and property. I do not promise that tomorrow, in a month or a year, I will make a regime change and “take over the power”. I have plans for my political party have 5-6 deputies at the National Assembly as a result of the elections in 2022 and 20% in the Parliament in 2027 to influence on the decision-making.”

I know that many people will grin about it, we always cherish a dream that we will roll “double six” three times and win. The long-term strategy is not to our liking. I know also that you would say, “Time is critical, we do not have so much time to calculate, the country is emptying, the Turks are intimidating and so on.” But have you not noticed that time becomes more critical by the calculation of “double six”.

… Recently, I read the “Cinderella”, the version of Brothers Grimm. The outcome there is much more severe than is it described in Charles Piero’s edition, probably, considering the theme of sin and redemption frequent voiced in the German culture. In particular, when the prince brings the shoe to try and it does not fit the foot of the elder sister, the mother instructs her, “cut your feet thumb, when you become a queen, you will not need to walk.” And when the same thing happens with the middle daughter, the mother instructs her to cut the heel for the same reason. As we know, none of them becomes a queen. But even if they had become, anyway, it would not exclude the necessity of walking. It comes from the short-term tactical defect.
