Michael Hesemann: Scotland and Northern Ireland will become independent countries

June 30,2016 21:00

“David Cameron lost his last battle”

German historian, author Michael Hesemann believes that it is not a good decision for Great Britain to exit European Union. In the interview with Aravot.am Hesemann said that the United Kingdom or at least part of its population always believed in something called splendid isolation:  “They always found themselves as an island separate from Europe. In my opinion two factors played a major role besides a lot of regulations which were coming from Brussels. And one factor is that Germany has leadership in Greece crisis which cost lot of money to a lot of countries. And second Germany’s policy of open gates in the refugee crisis and of course Germany’s closeness to Turkey. Erdoğan’s and Germany’s proposal to proceed negotiations about Turkey’s entry to the European Union which would be a catastrophe, it would be the end of the European Union, Christian civilization and the West.  It would be question of two or three civilizations until Europe would be Muslim. And England already has a big problem with its Muslim minority which is nearly a majority, London just got a Muslim mayor, and many English feel little bit strangeness on their own country and fear that it will continue.

Of course, it is wonderful to have ideals like building up society of religious freedom and equality, but part of the society have to will to live with each other in peace, not to dominate one over the other. Unfortunately, besides the majority of peaceful Muslims we have an increasing number of radicals in the same religion of Islam. Radicals cause more and more problems, so the perspective of getting more refugees plus more Turkish citizens in countries, including Turkish refugees is not perspective which many conservative English people would like. I think they could have prevented British exit of European Union by closer cooperation and listening more each partner state”.

Talking about the PM of Great Britain David Cameroon, Michael Hesemann said, that he is the great loser of today: “I can only have a great respect of this consequence, it was a logical consequence. He didn’t have an alternative, he lost his last battle. So I respect this consequence for his inner clarity. But on the other hand he is being something like a change Cameron, not a change boy, but a change Cameron, chameleon”.

In Michael Hesemann’s opinion Brexit is not a very clear decision, as British society showed that it is a divided society: “The next thing which would happen: Scotland and Northern Ireland will ask for sovereignty and will ask for readmission into European Union. And it is a funny thing that the main reason that Scotland at public vote remained within Great Britain, the main reason that Scottish population voted to stay within Great Britain was that they were afraid they will not be a member of European Union any more if they are not part of Great Britain. Now they will vote again to stay within European Union. I think the next step will be that Great Britain becomes diminished and remains only England, and Scotland and Northern Ireland become independent countries, maybe even one new country”.
