“After many years of a game of tug-of-war and rejected resolutions, the US Senate unanimously accepted the S.Res.150 in recognition of the Armenian Genocide for the first time, which was sponsored by senators Robert Menendez and Ted Cruz for the fourth time. How is the passage of this resolution important? We know that there have always been discussions in the House of Representatives, this resolution has been consistently accepted or rejected, or it was rejected by the Senate or did not even make it to the Senate for discussion. This was an important resolution if we take into consideration the fact that the USA is a military ally of Turkey,” Dean of the YSU Faculty of History, Edik Minasyan, said during a press conference on December 16th at the Tesaket press club.
According to him, Turkey’s response is not historical; Minasyan has always followed Turkey’s threats for sanctions after a country recognized the genocide. “Now, they are threatening to close the Incirlik military base. But I think that Turkey realized that the time for threatening the US is over. The USA, in essence, understood that Turkey is not a reliable ally. It will not stop the aggressive behavior that it is displaying in Syria.”
