‘The coronavirus needs to be taken seriously, but the panic surrounding it is more serious and can have negative consequences’: Narek Zeynalyan

March 02,2020 19:05

The chair of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Health Care and Social Affairs, Narek Zeynalyan, told journalists that the situation surrounding the coronavirus in Armenia is the same as it was yesterday, March 1st.

When asked about any information he has about face masks due to panic in society, Zeynalyan responded that there are masks being kept in a warehouse, but he is unaware of how many. “Of course, there is a deficit in pharmacies due to panic, which is more than necessary. The coronavirus needs to be taken seriously, but the panic that arose surrounding it is more serious and can have more negative consequences than making decisions based on objective and confirmed data. People are not 100 percent protected from getting sick while wearing masks.”

Journalists asked if the party is discussing the option of postponing the referendum or canceling it due to the coronavirus because it is a public event. Zeynalyan said that doing so will depend on how the situation develops. “If everything is constrained and no more cases are confirmed, if the virus does not spread, it will depend on any changes that will take place this week. Now, issues surrounding the campaigns are being resolved. Meetings in Yerevan have not been scheduled, although they are taking place in the regions. However, it is not necessary to underestimate the situation. We need to plan everything seriously, but it is not necessary to create panic, which is being done by several mass media outlets.”

When asked if it was a good decision to take the ill individual to Tsaghkadzor, Zeynalyan responded that it was necessary to make an operative decision and take the individual to an area that is closed off and where there are no other people or ill individuals.
