“If they’re telling us every day that we need to have good relations with Turks, conduct trade, and become friends, then that is a provocation. That spurs even more hatred among the majority of people. I can’t imagine that people will feel good about that. On the contrary, we grow even more panicked,” Honored Artist of Armenia and singer Anna Mayilyan told reporters during a press conference at the Hayeli press club regarding statements made by Armenian officials about relations with Turkey.
According to her, “To forget our history means to be killed again. Turks will never change their genetic background; they will always remain the same Turks. Of course, that nation has seen a lot, and it also has thoughtful people who know history, but how can we speak about relations today when we have captives who haven’t returned and soldiers who haven’t been buried? The enemy does not cease to express hatred from a hostile point of view every day.”
Anna Mayilyan expressed sorrowfully that society does not wish to endure this process. “That is an attack on our dignity. They are trying to stress us out every day. This has a purpose. It is difficult to be calm and thoughtful now. The core of the people always needs to be calm and strong.”
When asked if she will go to Tsitsernakaberd on April 24th if the government decides to hold events remotely due to the coronavirus once again, Anna Mayilyan said, “Of course. That day must be a day of remembrance everywhere. We can spend the night before at Tsitsernakaberd. That is our…” As she said this, the singer began to cry. Then, she added, “That is our dignity. We cannot trample over it.”
