Who defeated Aliyev in the European Parliament?

July 23,2022 16:14

Ankakh. The President of Azerbaijan received the delegation of the European Parliament in Baku the other day and expressed serious dissatisfaction with the “anti-Azerbaijani” position of the Parliament. It must be admitted that Aliyev’s indignation is not unfounded. Especially after the war, the European Parliament referred to the subject of Nagorno-Karabakh 4 times and adopted quite influential resolutions in favor of Artsakh and Armenia, and twice with special separate resolutions related to Artsakh. It is obvious that behind the adoption of all those important resolutions there was a professional, versatile, and consistent serious work. And it may seem incredible, but the last 4 important resolutions were adopted by the European Parliament mainly thanks to the efforts of one person: politician, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, former Head of National Security Service David Shahnazaryan.

He is known for his wide international connections and has been closely cooperating with individual deputies and structures of the European Parliament and other European Union circles for years. It should be noted that the Republican Party, which is a member of the European People’s Party, which is the largest faction of the European Parliament, also has its contribution in some resolutions. The Republican party also uses its connections in favor of the Artsakh issue.

We asked David Shahnazaryan to comment on Aliyev’s latest statements and to reflect on his role in the structures of the European Union, but the politician categorically refused to comment on his activities.

“Results are important,” he concluded. However, the fact that one person can record such valuable results in one of the most prestigious international forums, after the 44-day war and capitulation, proves that the doors of success are not closed to Armenia at all, as it seems or as the current government tries to represent. Let’s remember Nikol Pashinyan’s statement in the parliament on April 13.

“The international community says to lower your benchmark regarding the status of Nagorno-Karabakh, otherwise don’t count on us.” In fact, Armenia can count on the international community and at the same time keep the bar high, if the right work is done with that community. If one person can have influence in the adoption of such important international documents, what great results can be achieved if the state institutions and officials who have the mandate to engage in these activities have the desire, will and of course the ability to make those efforts.

As David Shahnazaryan emphasized in the conversation with Aravot, “These four resolutions of the European Parliament are a serious, powerful, effective, and solid systemic basis for state, political, public figures and experts defending the vital interests of the Republic of Artsakh in order to carry out large-scale, purposeful, and effective activities to strengthen Armenian interests in various international courts and meetings.”

However, it is at least surprising and incomprehensible that the Armenian political and expert circles do not even address these resolutions of the European Parliament. These resolutions are a serious trump card, especially in the hands of the Armenian government, if the latter wants to use them. But it is obvious that there is no such desire. Moreover, there is one more thing that the government is hindering these efforts, and the responsibility of serving the interest of Armenia remains on the shoulders of non-governmental figures and individuals. And if that doesn’t happen, then Armenia will nullify all its resources of national dignity and intelligence in front of the world.
