The Third President of RA, Serzh Sargsyan, in a briefing with journalists the other day, referred to the process of normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations, comparing it with the diplomatic work of his presidency and the current government. “In our time, during football diplomacy, the ball we sent remained in Turkey’s field, and during their diplomacy; unfortunately, the Turkish Bayraktars appeared in our country. This is the difference,” said Serzh Sargsyan.
Serzh Sargsyan does not know what the settlement of Armenian-Turkish relations will bring to our country. “Because a lot has been mixed up. At that time, our goal was not to open roads with Turkey, or we had any economic goals. Our main goal was to ensure the security of the Republic of Armenia; we desired to keep Turkey away from at least showing open military support to Azerbaijan. It’s clear, isn’t it, that if you make a principled decision, then you calculate inside yourself: if it works, what will be the benefit? If it doesn’t work, what will be the benefit?
Even if it didn’t work out, we got enough benefits because the international community was convinced we were not the reason for the lack of relations. Considering what they are negotiating, I don’t know what it will give now. We published our negotiation package. Are you aware of what they are negotiating about, what they are talking about? They often repeat that it is without preconditions. They repeat it often, so they don’t suddenly forget. But what do we know, is it without preconditions or with preconditions because there are other announcements as well?
