The precondition for preventing a new genocide

April 29,2024 10:30

On April 24, Nubar Afeyan, Co-Founder of the “Aurora” humanitarian initiative, made a global appeal to prevent a new genocide. Afeyan rightly notes that “the world is busy” and the forced displacement of 120 thousand Armenians, the entire population of Artsakh, went unnoticed by that “busy” world. Attention is also not paid to the fact that Armenians continue to be kept illegally in the prison of Azerbaijan, in essence, as hostages.

Regarding the authorities of Armenia, the American-Armenian businessman notes that after last year’s invasion of Azerbaijan, Armenia has relinquished efforts to achieve autonomy for Nagorno Karabakh.

I should add that Armenia has given up many other things at the state level. For example, in his address on April 24, Prime Minister Pashinyan used the term “Genocide” 4 times and the phrase “Great massacre” 11 times, thus shifting the emphasis to a legally and scientifically empty concept. He also clearly implies that we, the Armenians, bear the responsibility for the Genocide and the upheavals that followed it.

But the discussion of these problems is probably the domain of politicians, not Nubar Afeyan or me. What’s left for us people with no political ambition? Not only to remember but also to act, as the Co-Founder of the “Aurora” initiative urges. Act to prevent another genocide.

It has one main precondition: to admit that the ethnic cleansing that took place in Artsakh was the first trigger of the genocide, and if nothing changes, other similar actions would follow it.

After recording that fact, it is necessary to harmonize the efforts, first within the Armenian society and then at the level of the worldwide Armenian people. I have some idea what exactly it is about. But I think the issue should be discussed at least.
