During a conversation with www.aravot.am, Avetik Ishkhanyan, the head of the Helsinki Committee of Armenia, talking about Mher Yenokyan and generally the issue of those convicted to life imprisonment, expressed the following opinion, “Even the election didn’t change anything, since the system continues to remain the same. It perfects itself, so to speak. For example, if one talks about the election, the elections were rigged using an active method in the past, whereas now it is done secretly. The same thing applies to the legal and generally all other systems.”
Going into detail, Mr. Ishkhanyan noted, “Our government doesn’t want to deal with the case of those convicted to life imprisonment. They consider that case closed.”
Another fact that Mr. Ishkhanyan mentioned was the following, “Our legal system never admits that it has made a mistake, whereas in many developed countries, there are such precedents. In our country, I can remember only one such precedent, when Armen Poghosyan arrested for rape was acquitted years later and the Attorney General gave him the book The Count of Monte Cristo. Someone suddenly appeared in that case and was found guilty.”
Mr. Ishkhanyan has no hopes that the legal system of the Republic of Armenia can reach the level one day, when it will admit the mistakes it has made and will review a set of cases. A. Ishhanyan has formed such an opinion, because he doesn’t see willingness in this system to realize and fix the mistakes.
