Daniel Ioannisyan: We will not follow the six-month framework the Venice Commission suggested

October 10,2018 18:33

Before the snap parliamentary elections, the prime minister, along with the electoral reform professional committee and the government, have created a plan that would introduce changes to the Electoral Code. This will be presented to the parliament this week.

Daniel Ioannisyan said that the upcoming elections will most likely be carried out through the new Electoral Code. But he also doesn’t exclude the possibility of some changes taking place after the elections, simply because they won’t be able to make those changes beforehand.

The concept of the Electoral Code was sent to the Venice Commission on October 5th. Ioannisyan said that they will not be following the six-month framework suggested by the Venice Commission, because it’s unlikely that any problems will arise. “I don’t think that any problems will arise. The norms of the Venice Commission aren’t imperative. There are countries that are members of the European Parliament that don’t send their electoral codes to the Venice Commission at all. But it’s a very competent committee, that’s why we sent ours,” the electoral reform professional committee secretary Daniel Ioannisyan told “Armenian Times” in an interview.
